Z Towers in Riga, Latvia. Interesting project lead by the SPI Group (vodka producer). The two towers will include office space as well as a four star hotel and some shops. The towers will be the tallest buildings of Riga. I'm curious for the final result!

Salaspils

Today I went to the former concentration camp of Salaspils, located around 20 kilometers from Riga. It was built during the winter of 1941/1942 under horrible inhumane conditions by Jewish men who were deported from the German Reich. Salaspils was the largest concentration camp of the Baltics, imprisoning many Latvians as well as political prisoners of different nationalities. Terrible medical experiments were carried out on children. I was touched by the amount of stuffed animals and toys placed at the memorial in remembrance of all innocent children. Now all that is left of the camp are the foundations of some barracks and statues, symbolizing hope and defiance. I strolled around the former camp for an hour or so, all alone. It was completely silent, except for the discreet sound system, which continuously played the sound of an immortal heart beat.

New job, new apartment and a trip to Kaunas (LT)

It has been almost 2 months since I updated my blog the last time. Many things happened and a lot of things permanently changed. This might sound a bit dramatic but I mean it in a very positive way. The last week of September I packed my orange Dutch-like suitcase again and headed to Bremen airport, accompanied by my dad who is so lovely to always bring me there. Destination: Riga. Again. I managed to arrange an internship there for the next 6 months. Before boarding I was, as usual, the lucky one to undergo all hardcore security checks. Even my bag and laptop were checked on some kind of bad prohibited substance I forgot the name of. Luckily everything was all right. While waiting in the queue I had a small conversation with an older German couple. They’ve been visiting Riga since 1991. A lot changed since that time. I already notice that when I compare the Riga of 2011 with the one I was introduced to in 2009. Riga is rapidly transforming into a city with Western innovations.

I started an internship at Riga In Your Pocket. This is one of the most successful city travel guides from the In Your Pocket series (if not THE most successful). Every two months a printed version of the guide is published and besides that Riga In Your Pocket has its own very informative website and app. I decided to apply at this city guide since it’s the only one in Riga providing true hearted information with a great sense of humor. If something is not 100% ok it will be written down in the guide, whilst other travel guides only publish the ‘this is the best restaurant in town’ reviews submitted by restaurants themselves. At the moment I’m responsible for providing pictures and movies which I upload to the world wide web. I absolutely love walking around in Riga, discovering even the smallest details of sights and unknown places I’ve never been before. Also rediscovering special locations makes a lot of fun. Last week I went to Sigulda, located in Latvia’s biggest national park. I made a video report about what all can be seen there and how beautiful the scenery looks during ‘Zelta Rudens’ – Golden Autumn. Even though my European Studies background didn’t really prepare me for a job in photography and video reporting, I must admit that I absolutely love this switch. I feel a lot more comfortable in this creative position than being busy with European policy reports all day long.

Besides the new job something else important changed. Felix and I moved to another apartment in Old Town. We live in a quiet street now in a small but cozy and stylish apartment. The eye catcher of our living room is a wall which dates back from 1300. I furthermore have my very own Finnish sauna now!

Together with Felix I went on a weekend trip to Kaunas, Lithuania. Some kilometers before Vilnius the bus suddenly stopped in the middle of the road. Smoke appeared in the bus, together with a horrible burnt smell. Passengers remained calm but shared some worried looks. The smoke was that disgusting that I had to put a scarf in front of my mouth and nose. After some minutes the smoke slowly disappeared and the bus drove on. The bus drivers’ assistant didn’t even mention through the microphone what went wrong. Typical Baltic. Luckily we arrived in Kaunas without any further problems. Interesting city. It was a Saturday afternoon and it was not too busy in the city centre. Even though there were actually some people on the streets it was absolutely quiet. I never experienced something like that in any other city. It was slightly mysterious. Something which later on surprised us is the fact that we saw so many smiling happy Lithuanians. In comparison with Riga, people in Kaunas look a lot more happy. Also noticeable was that we hardly saw any Russians. The reason why we went to Kaunas the first place was a concert of Jean-Michel Jarre. It was wonderful to see him perform a fantastic live show once, since I’ve been listening to his music from my early childhood already. It ‘s a miracle we eventually got out of the bus in one piece again when arriving in Riga. It seems a true trend in the Baltics to overtake when it’s actually not possible. My frightened facial expression showed up several times again during the bus ride. Luckily not because I was about to puke, what’s normally often almost the case. Occasionally three cars/big trucks were driving all next to each other, even though there are only two driving lanes. Dangerous. Death rates on Baltic motor ways are extremely high and understand why!

So, a lot of positive changes and nice trips the last weeks. The whole moving chapter was quite exhausting and stressy, however, it’s finally time to relax now (in the sauna!). Time to enjoy and to slowly focus on my future plans. What to do after my internship? Where? Do I want to do a Master programme next study year? What? Where? So many possibilities… Any suggestions? Bring it on!

Another wonderful edition of Mondial Air Ballons has come to an end. I'm very thankful I could share this exhausting but magnificent week with the most humorous, easy going and lovely people from the world of ballooning. Thanks everybody; see you in two years!

Not as much fog as yesterday morning; nice! After the briefing I went straight off to the France 3 studio. Finally, the preparations could be start for a short interview. Peter George put his balloon in sight of the camera, so I was filmed together with my favorite balloon taking off. During the interview the moderator and I discussed the Mondial Air Ballons fan page, the ‘waiting waiting waiting… cancel’ principle and the improvements made by the organization this year. After the interview I took a short walk over the launch area with my dad. We enjoyed the slight sun and the huge amount of balloons still taking off. When we were about to go back to our car a French balloon team headed towards us. Clever lesson: never say ‘no’ immediately when a Frenchman asks if you speak French (that’s what a young couple standing near to us did). After a ‘un peu’ from my side the pilot invited us to join his flight since he didn’t have passengers yet. So, there we went, completely unexpected with both feet from the ground again. From the first moment onwards I had this strange ‘I hope this will all be ok’ feeling. Confused rushing crew members, the balloon not spread out towards the right direction, twisted wires, etc… What was I doing here? Is this French style ballooning? Eventually I climbed on board, keeping this uncomfortable feeling during the whole flight. I was surprised however by the amazing sight from above. The sun was doing its best to burn away some little sheep like clouds while still many balloons were happily flying over typical small French villages. After this moment of enjoyment I decided to close my eyes. Landing time. My goodness, we were heading straight towards a retrieve vehicle parked in the middle of our landing field. We had quite some speed and after lots and lots of burning the basket eventually just missed the car. Oefff! Then the actual landing came: BAM BAM BAM; an elbow in my stomach, a heavy guy falling on me and a propane tank which was not safely secured crushing my feet. What a delight to be out of that basket again. Luckily the morning ended calm. During refueling I had a little children talk in French with the pilot his son and his little friend. They for example asked me if I have animals at home. After my answer they proudly summed up all their pets. Sweet. The pilot’s son is blind but I was amazed by the brightness of this little fellow. He disconnected all gas valves on his own and was perfectly manageable to help packing the balloon. He did everything by touch, and it was great to see how well this worked out.

The evening started with Austrian schnapps and cookies, hmm! The Dutch-Latvian team from Hans van Hoesel asked if my dad and I wanted to join for a flight with the ladybird balloon later on. Of course! We got introduced to the Russian team and their self made balloon. Even though there was a slight language barrier the Russians left a really good impression giving us a nice Russian balloon magazine and some pictures of their balloon. In comparison with this morning I felt comfortable and safe right away with Hans and his son Andris both flying the balloon. It was relatively dark, however, the colors were good for the pictures. It was a very pleasant flight with a hard but way better landing than this morning.

During the slowly traditional British-American ballooning after party we enjoyed some cheesecake and champagne. Unfortunately it was also already time to say goodbye to some Americans leaving France tomorrow in the early morning again. This long day ended with a sweet comment from Priscilla: ‘I will call one of my kitty cats Nienke!’. Adorable.

So much fog this morning! When driving towards the launch field we could only look some meters ahead of us. This continued the whole morning: fog, fog and even more fog. The organization still saw a possibility for takeoff and kept the pilots waiting. After a two our nap in the car I noticed the situation still didn’t change. My dad and I drove onto the field and met Hans Pravda and his still half asleep team there. We tried to keep ourselves awake with Austrian homemade schnapps. Good morning! The flight was eventually canceled, as well as the interview which was actually scheduled for today. Off to Nancy for a short city trip then! Together with my dad I walked the Art Nouveau route there. We had a look at Villa Majorelle and the museum of the School of Nancy. Definitely worth a visit if you’re into Art Nouveau. Lovely architecture and furniture can be found there. In a Russian food shop I later on found the curd snacks I normally eat everyday when being in Latvia. Hmm, happy Nienke!

The evening didn’t bring much good. The weather was getting worse and worse and the flight had to be canceled. Back at the hotel Peter, Sarah, my dad and I enjoyed a beer and a delicious cheesecake while watching pictures and movies from flights earlier this week.

MAB 2011: Thursday 28 July

After the shortest night till now I drove to the airbase together with Sarah and my dad. We saw two gasballoons; they took off already before the briefing started. The gasballoon with German pilots Dominik Haggeney and Astrid Gehardt was about to take off when the briefing just started. No briefing for me; my still well working gasballoon magnet sent me straight towards this mysterious envelop filled with hydrogen. The balloon eventually took off carrying a Norwegian flag. What a lovely gesture. The hot air balloon pilots prepared themselves for another morning flight. The sun tried its very best to show up, but after 10 minutes it failed already again.

This evening the sun surprised us all. It was there, the whole time! That didn’t happen during any day before. In the hangar I met Dutch balloon pilot Hans van Hoesel. We eventually figured out that Hans has an apartment in Riga, only a few blocks away from where I normally live. What a small world! I was pleased to meet Hans his wife and her son later on; they’re from Latvia but speak Dutch perfectly.

A while ago someone from the France 3 television station contacted me and my dad with the message that they would like to interview us about our Mondial Air Ballons fansite www.mondialairballons.com. My dad decided this would be a good job for me. We went to the studio, introduced ourselves and got all kind of information about how France 3 put this event in the spotlights, on television and on the world wide web. The interview is scheduled for tomorrow morning during takeoff, live from the launch field. Exciting!

American pilot Mike Shrum invited me and my dad to join him for the evening flight. He brought ‘Laristra’ with him; the biggest chili pepper ever. I was honored to step on board of this fascinating balloon. We took off accompanied by hundreds of smiling faces from the audience looking at us while applauding. Goosebumps! What a lovely moment. When my dad later on asked Mike why on earth he bought this difficult to handle balloon he pointed out that a happy audience makes every drop of sweat worth it. He’s absolutely right. We had a great flight with the three of us. Eventually 24 people helped packing the balloon. All these people later on stood in a big truck like cattle, going back to the airbase for some refueling. Another perfect day in France; a big thank you to Mike, Nick and their French help troops!

MAB 2011: Wednesday 27 July

I started the day with sleepy eyes and a warm bath at 04.30 a.m. Every day here starts with a one second thought: ‘why am I doing this to myself?’, followed by some mental images of a mass take off at Chambley. Then I realize again that all these early wake ups are definitely worth it. A line up was scheduled for this morning with the aim to set a new world record. It was a wonderful sight to see hundreds of balloons lined up and take off almost simultaneously. My dad made a flight with Austrian balloon pilot Hans Pravda while I stayed with two feet on the ground capturing today’s record attempt. Most balloons eventually disappeared out of sight because of some slight fog while some were still carefully lighted by some shy sunrays. I took a break reading the local newspaper and chatting around with a Dutch balloon spotter who nicknamed himself ‘Scooter Willy’. When Willy decided to hunt for some food I kept myself awake with some Finnish symphonic metal (even though I absolutely don’t like metal; a symphonic touch can do miracles). When my dad came back we joined Tarp and Desiree Head and Peter George’s team drinking beer and champagne while eating chocolate, sausages and cheese. What a lovely breakfast!

The afternoon was rather lazy. After a nap I took a small walk through Pont-a-Mousson. It was quite sunny and warm, but that changed once we got off to the launch area. Sarah and I filled the time we had to wait with our traditional two year update talk; lovely girly gossip once again. Peter invited me to fly with him and his G-UKUK today. Yeah, flight number 50! It was great to share this special milestone with Peter and Sarah, who also joined the flight. After half an hour we had to land because a big grayish cloud was approaching. What a coincidence, the weather was ok everywhere and right above the field and towards our landing spot this massive bad cloud had to appear. Our landing caused a big traffic jam since everyone passing us stopped to make a picture. Some curious French children ran towards us for a small welcome, however, once they heard the burner their scared faced showed up. When hiding behind their mom they were fine again. Isaac, Tarp and Desiree did some good retrieving and found us right away. With some teamwork we packed the balloon within minutes. One French spectator started asking all kind of irrelevant questions. I was unable to answer any of them since I couldn’t stop smiling about his 10 cm zipper being unintentionally opened proudly. I have some difficulties taking persons serious in such a situation. As soon as we closed the trailer it started to rain. What a shower! At the entertainment area of the airbase we eventually found some empty tents. There we built up a little table which we packed with food and drinks. Next to our tent was a ‘free fall simulator’; a huge turbine which makes you feel like flying even though you’re secured with some elastic ropes. That was some great entertainment during the late evening.

This morning some rain fronts were present at the area around the launch field, however, they were luckily far away enough to cause any trouble. Conclusion: flyable! It was an extremely grey morning but hundreds of pilots quickly changed it into a colorful one with hundreds of balloons. Some voluntary retrieving brought some nice shots of heaps of balloons over French little villages.

After a welcome nap my dad and I took off to Metz. We combined our visit with a short stop at the garage where we left our replacement car. The funny mechanic welcomed us with a happy 'Oooh, mister Bos, hahaha!'. Our own Ford is repaired; dad’s wallet is a lot lighter now but in return we got a nice working car again. We took a cab which brought us from the garage to our hotel. The driver was very talkative. He guessed I was from Sweden and gave me some compliments about my light hair color. I rediscovered the fact that I learned French for some years. I somehow managed to have a half an hour long smooth conversation with the cab driver about balloons, Dutch tulips and Dutch people invading the French motorway. It was extremely rainy once we arrived at the hotel. Luckily the rain soon disappeared and allowed all pilots to make a pleasant flight without too much wind. Once again I had a wonderful time hunting around for nice shots at the launch area.

MAB 2011: Monday 25 July

We started the day with some slight rain, a rainbow and a nice reddish sunrise. After the briefing all the teams drove onto the field but there the weather only seemed to get worse. My dad and I found shelter against the drizzle and enjoyed some fresh breads from the patisserie at the press area. Eventually a sign was given for departure. Slowly all teams started unpacking and inflating their balloons. The weather got better and better. I was overwhelmed again by the enormous amount of balloons surrounding me. When wanting to take a ‘happy people ready for departure action picture’ German pilot Matthias Schlegel asked if I wanted to join. Ofcourse! Together with Matthias, Bastian and one of their friends I made one of my best flights ever. The abundance of balloons pleased Matthias’s team, who’s present at the Mondial Air Ballons for the first time. I’m sure they’re hooked now and will come back whenever possible. What a flight… The wind took us all over the launch area, a beautiful sun flower field and then back to the Chambley airbase again. Many balloons were clustering together, drifting over the field and back. After the event I’ll post some pictures of this flight which will illustrate the great ambiance way better than words can.

The evening flight can be concluded in only a few words: a lot of waiting, wind and the smell of burnt fabric. The pilots that eventually took off left the launch area almost immediately while still two big rain fronts were visible on both sides of the field. Gertjan Veldman was so kind to bring me and my dad a bag of crisps; we were definitely in need of that after all the walking and the cold of the last few days. The evening ended with the Brits and Americans again. French cheese, champagne, more crisps, and so on. Tasty food, some drinks and a bunch of ballooning people is a very nice combination! Now off to bed again. These long days and short nights are heavy to survive, but definitely worth the tiredness.

The rain was suddenly expected to start a little earlier today. Pity! Flight cancelled. After driving back and forth to the launch area I decided to take a little nap again. In the afternoon my dad and I were dropped off at a garage in Jouy-aux-Arches by the team of Peter George (so kind!). There we could pick up our temporary car since our Ford Focus is still unable to safely transport us. We had to wait at least an hour before the mechanic came to help us, so we decided to enjoy a big meal at the American looking Buffalo Grill. Hmm, tasty! The mechanic was late – we’re in France – but eventually showed up. And, guess who he was? The funny half drunk joker which helped us out Friday night as well! Seems the amount of alcohol in his blood was still approximately at the same high level like last time, or, he’s just acting like a confused clown all the time. A very nice VW Golf with Dutch car sign was waiting for us in the garage. What a nice spicy car. Some paper work had to be arranged before my dad and I could continue our way. Here we were introduced to the mechanic’s small but heavy dictionary. He didn’t seem to get along too well with his computer and his behavior secretly made me think about myself when struggling with complicated page number issues in Word for an hour. However, the best man’s language was a bit more aggressive than mine in these occasions. He called his computer at least 15 times ‘putain’ (for the case you don’t know the meaning of this word, Google is your best friend). To make his funny anger more clear to us non-Frenchmen he added some more ‘scheisse, scheisse, aaah!’. After a lot of ‘ooh, papier papier papier’ we could hit the road again.

It was a little windy but there were good hopes for the evening flight. However, before the wind would drop down it was time for one of the most common activities in ballooning: waiting. Besides the balloon event itself there are many little attractions to be found near the launch area like exhibitions, small shops with local products and fun fair machines. My dad managed to hurt his little finger on a sharp wooden edge. Luckily three first aid brothers put all their power together to fix him a nice tiny band aid. Our patience was eventually rewarded. Together with the team of Austrian balloon pilot Hans Pravda my dad and I drove onto the launch field. We were standing in the basket on an open trailer happily waiving to all pilots and their crewmembers from all over the world. During takeoff I finally got this massive ‘balloon kick’ again which till now only a gasballoon or a nice evening during the Mondial Air Ballons can give me. The sun appeared at the very right moment. It was absolutely great to run around the huge field again to make some good shots.

When wanting to go home Sarah stopped us. She was having some champagne with her British friends and a whole bunch of great Americans. Once again I became very enthusiastic about the biggest balloon event in the world which is held in Albuquerque (New Mexico). When I was a little younger my dad promised me to go there once I would finish my education. Since this month I’m officially finished with my Bachelor programme, so maybe we should slowly think about heading to the States once. With a little help from some ballooning friends that should hopefully be manageable. I’m already looking forward to it!

Around 22.00 pm it was time to go back to the hotel again. I accidently ruined the nice new car smell of our Volkswagen immediately. Seems I was so lucky to place my shoes in a giant heap of dog poo during my hunt for nice pictures and movie material. What a coincidence, on such a huge field I managed to step into this heavily aromatized substance. Beeeh! And smelly it was. No worries for tomorrow; I just cleaned my shoes and they smell like roses again now.

MAB 2011: Saturday 23 July

Saturday we took it slow. We didn’t attend the morning flight since we were back around 3 a.m. because of our broken car. The afternoon my dad and I spent at Pont-a-Mousson, where also our hotel can be found. It’s a relatively big village for this area in France. The lovely team from Peter George (from the G-UKUK, ‘Grand Britannia’) with crewmembers Sarah and Isaac took us with them to the launch field for the evening flight. Many new teams arrived this day and it was good to see back friends from Germany, Austria and Belgium. Every two year this ‘one big ballooning family’ feeling shows up again; great! Unfortunately the weather wasn’t that wonderful so it was decided to cancel the Saturday evening flight and just drink a beer.

This evening we had a quick look at the city centre of Pont-a-Mousson. A small concert was held there with a medley of all kind of French chansons. The audience was a bit more enthusiastic than the average audience during a festival in Latvia (which means: actually not enthusiastic at all) but that was maybe due to the fact that it was still early and the beer tents seemed to be forgotten during the planning of the event.

For tomorrow some showers are predicted around 09.00 a.m. and therefore the briefing will be held a little earlier. Time to set my alarm clock now: 04.30 a.m. should be manageable. Last night I almost didn’t sleep because of the cold so my heating system is now making my room into a sauna. Nighty night!

MAB 2011: Friday 22 July

Finally, after two years without having seen almost any balloon it's time for Europe's best event again: Mondial Air Ballons 2011. The whole air base is renewed and that was clearly noticeable. Some beautiful new wooden hangars are placed and some not-really-working-out-yet driveways were created all across the area.

The weather didn't look too well, however, eventually around 100 pilots decided to take off. Pilot Per Lesser from Sweden invited me and my dad to fly with the worlds biggest hygienic glove. We made a short but great flight over hangar 610 and a typical sweet French village nearby. We made a sportive landing in a relatively muddy field. Bye bye white balloon! After carefully packing all fingers together we visited the newly constructed gas station to refuel the tanks.

Time to go back to the hotel again... Unfortunately, this took some hours. The cooling liquid of our car leaked out and it was impossible to continue our way. There we were, in the middle of nowhere in France. After some contact with the Dutch emergency service a French rescue vehicle was sent our way. This took some hours... It was starting to get really cold outside. Luckily I brought my winter jacket with me. After 02.00 a.m. a funny half drunk French mechanic finally found us. He provided us with sufficient cooling liquid. Around 03.00 a.m. we were finally home. No morning flight for us; first some sleep. All garages are closed during the weekend which means we have to wait till Monday to let our car fixed. Hopefully we'll be able to get a replacement car for the next coming days. We'll see... In France some things just don’t work out that fast. Well, the 2011 edition of the Mondial Air Ballons definitely had an adventurous start!

Vandaag ben ik er weer eens lekker op uit geweest. In mijn element, gewapend met mijn camera en een zakje Haribo framboosjes heb ik de hele middag door Riga gelopen. Wederom heb ik veel nieuwe, mysterieuze straatjes ontdekt waar ik nog nooit eerder geweest was. Deze stad blijft me verbazen. Na de zomervakantie dan toch maar weer terug? Ik zit er sterk aan te denken. Fijn dat dat gewoon allemaal kan :).

Vandaag heb ik met mijn begeleidster een eindgesprek gehad over mijn stage; een uur lang babbelen over Estland, de Estse cultuur en mijn opdrachten bij het Institute of Baltic Studies. Conclusie: een 9 voor mijn stage en een felicitatie voor het succesvol beëindigen van mijn studie. Joepie!! Over twee weekjes mag ik mijn diploma ophalen in Maastricht :).

The last few weeks I attended the ‘basics of tv production’ course every work day from 09.00 till 12.00. A lot of interesting theory about picture telling, camera drifts, journalistic guidelines etc. Together with my classmates Olga from Russia and Ernesto from Mexico I had the opportunity to use professional camera material in order to shoot a short news item. We decided to make a small report about the animal shelter in Mikkeli. Hematogen

Another interesting discovery concerning food… When walking through Rimi I saw the ‘Hematogen’ bars were in discount for only 33 santim per bar. The smiling sun and happy figures on the package made me try this innocent looking piece of candy. After a closer investigation I read the following on the package: 'Food supplement. Do not use as food substitute. Store out of reach of children. The daily dosage should not be exceeded'. Hmm, mysterious. So that’s why this stuff was laying around in the ‘health corner’ instead of the sweets department.

I unwrapped the package and found a dark brown kind of like chocolate looking heavy little bar in there. Conclusion after the first bite: interesting texture, not even so bad. All the precautions on the package made me rather curious about what exactly makes this piece of candy so different from the rest. Wikipedia helped me out. Hematogen seems to be a Russian fudge candy bar. Sounds not too bad right? However, it surprised me to read what one of the main ingredients is: cow’s blood! And indeed, the after taste is kind of iron like. After some more research I figured out that this bar works very well against anemia. This can also be found back in the name, which is actually Greek for blood maker.

The Finnish adventure has come to an end

I’m safely back home in Riga after a wonderful time in beautiful Finland. I’ll miss this country, the nice courses at the university, the tasty food and my lovely guest family very much!

Yesterday I left Mikkeli around 4.20. It was a sad moment, leaving my guest mom behind crying. The bus ride was one of the best I’ve ever had: pine forest everywhere, lakes with dawn and a pinkish blue sky. Absolutely breathtaking. Unfortunately I didn’t succeed to spot a moose, even though there were warning signs everywhere!

Around 12.00 it was time to fly back from Tampere to Riga. I by the way never saw such a small airport. All RyanAir flights depart from a gate the size of a small bus station. I occupied the row next to the emergency exit since only there I had some space for the long Dutch legs I inherited from my even taller dad.

Felix picked me up from the airport and together we enjoyed the various kinds of Finnish chocolate bars I brought him. Hmm :)!

I can look back with a lot of happiness on the wonderful time I spent in Finland.

Verjaardag van de buurvrouw en de examens in zicht

Vandaag hebben we tijdens de Finse cultuur klas kaneelbroodjes gebakken; erg lekker! Ook konden we een stukje rendier proberen. Dat ging er ook wel goed in.

In de avond ben ik samen met Anu en Jeremias naar de buurvrouw geweest. Ze is jarig vandaag. Er stond een hele lekkere frambozentaart voor ons klaar. Het was echt zo'n theeleut bezoekje; zo gezellig! De mensen die ik hier tot nu toe ontmoet heb zijn heel hartelijk. Ik voel me hier erg welkom. De tijd gaat enorm snel en zaterdag vertrek ik al weer richting Riga. Ik had eigenlijk nog best wel wat langer in Mikkeli willen blijven!

Voordat ik ga slapen neem ik nog even mijn examenstof voor morgen door. Om 09.00 uur krijg ik twee uur de tijd om de basics of tv production toets te maken. Morgenmiddag gaan we met de Finse cultuurklas de meren op om een stukje te varen. Ik ben benieuwd hoe dat zal gaan, aangezien het hier met slechts 8 graden non stop regent. Voor donderdag staat het Finse cultuur examen op het programma. Aangezien ik tijdens de lessen een twintigtal stencils vol feitjes over Finland heb ontvangen heb ik dus nog wel wat te lezen.

Aan mijn niet zo boeiende schrijfstijl is misschien wel te merken dat ik ongelooflijk moe ben. Na alweer een actieve lange dag is het tijd om snel mijn luchtbedje maar weer eens op te zoeken :)!

Onweer in Finland

Hallo Nederland! Hier live vanuit een dikke vette onweersbui een nieuw blogberichtje... Het is de laatste dagen echt bloedje heet geweest; rond de 30 graden. En dan te bedenken dat ik vorige maand nog vrolijk in mijn winterjas rond huppelde! Op het moment onweert het hier al een paar uurtjes. Stiekem vind ik het best gezellig. De stroom is zojuist uitgevallen maar alles werkt inmiddels weer. Het regent pijpenstelen maar ik heb de deur even lekker wijd opengezet. Weg met de broeierige lucht hier in huis! Wel fijn, die frisse dennenbos lucht. Nu is het tijd om alvast een beetje te leren voor mijn examens van woensdag en donderdag... De tijd gaat echt snel :).

Another lovely day in Finland

En ik maar denken dat ik nog wel wat vrije tijd over zou hebben hier in Finland. Niet dus! Vandaag weer een drukke maar geweldige dag gehad samen met mijn fijne Russische en Chinese klasgenoten. Na een technische filmmontage les vertrokken we richting de berg die ik ook zaterdag al beklommen had. Later die middag was het weer eens tijd voor een rondje sauna. Aangezien ik vaak last heb van gespannen rugspieren deed me dit erg goed. Het werd me uiteindelijk wel erg heet daar dus ik ben om af te koelen een groot meer ingedoken. Met een paar klasgenoten uit China heb ik op ditzelfde meer nog een mooi boottochtje gemaakt. Allemaal weer typische Finse activiteiten dus, maar wel heel leuk!

Vermoeiend weekend in de Finse natuur

Wat een druk weekend! Zaterdag ben ik samen met Anu en Jeremias wezen 'hiken'. Eerst zijn we naar hun zomerhuisje gereden en vanaf daar met de boot naar het begin van de wandelroute gevaren. We beklommen de Neitvuori berg na een zware wandeltocht dwars door het bos. Erg vermoeiend! Ik denk dat we uiteindelijk wel 12 km over smalle bospaadjes afgelegd hebben. Op een speciaal daarvoor gemaakte plaats hebben we een vuurtje gestookt en worstjes gebraden. Heel gezellig, zo midden in het bos. Later op de avond zijn we naar het zomerhuisje van Anu haar verloofde, Penna, gereden. Ik mocht mee op de boot om een paar visnetten uit te zetten. We sloten de avond af met een traditioneel bezoekje aan de sauna. Met uitzicht op het meer dook ik rond een uur of 23.00 maar al te graag mijn bedje in. Ik heb in tijden niet zo goed geslapen. Om 05.00 uur was Penna al weer wakker om de visnetten leeg te halen. Op het ontbijtmenu stonden dus ook verse visjes. Ik hield het liever bij brood en meatballs.

Zondag werd er ergens 15 km van Mikkeli een feest gehouden ter ere van de 50ste verjaardag van Anu haar collega. Ook twee jongemannen vierden hun afstuderen. Veel valt hierover niet te vertellen, alleen dat ik goed genoten heb van al het lekkere eten.

Ik ben eigenlijk veel te moe om nog meer te typen dus misschien is het beter om gewoon even de foto's van dit weekend te bekijken. Hier staan ze:

Het dierenasiel: de eerste kennismaking

Zo, vandaag was een lange maar succesvolle dag. Samen met Olga en Ernesto, mijn groepsgenoten, ben ik op onze filmlocatie wezen kijken; een lief houten huisje vol met goed uitziende dieren en hier en daar wat Finse klusjesmannen. Geen één die er Engels sprak. We maakten kennis met een van de vrijwilligsters en onze hoop steeg. Het was een Duitse vrouw uit Augsburg die al een aantal jaren in Finland woont. Perfect! Aangezien ik de enige was die met haar kon communiceren heb ik haar uiteindelijk uitgelegd wat de bedoeling is en dat we volgende week graag nog een keertje langskomen om wat mooie beelden te schieten van het nieuwe dierenasiel aan de rand van Mikkeli. Ik kreeg een telefoon toegestopt met aan de andere kant van de lijn de enige medewerkster met wat kennis van de Engelse taal (handig voor een interviewtje dat we graag in het Engels willen houden!). We spraken af elkaar maandag in de namiddag te ontmoeten. Fijn; dat ook weer geregeld!

Summer cottage, hangtieten en honden

Moi! Ja... zo zeggen ze hier gedag, net zoals in Drenthe! Ik heb het nog steeds erg naar m'n zin in Finland. Iedere ochtend volg in de tv productie lessen en in de middag doe ik mee met de Finse Cultuur groep. Er staan heel wat leuke uitjes op het programma.

Dinsdag ben ik samen met mijn gastmoeder, Anu, naar de summer cottage van haar verloofde geweest. Heel leuk; een klein huisje aan een prachtig meer, midden in het bos. Ik heb veel bijzondere vogels en eenden gezien. Helaas heb ik nog nooit een eland in het wild kunnen spotten, maar... ik ben al wel vol in de elandpoep getrapt!

Gisteren zijn we met de cultuurklas gaan zwemmen. Aangezien Finnen echte saunafreaks zijn hebben we ook dat ritueel niet overgeslagen. De kleine Chinese meisjes moesten hier wel even flink aan wennen. Overal liepen ongeschoren, cellulite en hangtiet hebbende dikke naakte moekes rond! Ik was doodop van het zwemmen en fietsen dus de avond heb ik al hangend op de bank doorgebracht. Ik heb een groot pak mintchocolade koekjes opgegeten. Heerlijk! Ik was alleen wel een beetje beroerd daarna...

Hemelvaartsdag is een officiële feestdag in Finland. Ik hoefde dus niet naar school vandaag maar heb uiteindelijk wel wat voor mijn tv project gedaan samen met mijn Russische en Mexicaanse groepsgenoten. We zijn van plan een korte reportage te maken over een dierenasiel, met name over het tweede leven van een trouwe viervoeter. Morgen gaan we voor het eerst de locatie bekijken. Ik ben benieuwd!

Eerste schooldag in Mikkeli

Hier even een kort berichtje vanuit Finland. Ik ben woensdag veilig aangekomen in Tampere na een korte maar turbulente vlucht. Het was erg fijn om Anne weer even te zien. Het ziet er naar uit dat ze haar plekje in Pori wel gevonden heeft! Gisteren kwam ik na een lange treinreis aan in Mikkeli waar mijn gastmoeder en broertje me al op stonden te wachten. Wat een vriendelijke mensen! Ik voelde me meteen op m'n gemak. De nacht bracht ik door in de huiskamer, op een heerlijk comfortabel luchtbed. Dat houd ik nog wel drie weken vol! Zojuist heb ik mijn eerste Basics of tv production les gehad. Aan de ene kant van de klas zaten de Europeanen en twee Chinezen en aan de andere kant van de klas zat een grote groep Russen. Ik ben benieuwd of die tweedeling blijft bestaan. Mijn lessen zijn van 09.00 tot 12.00; dat komt neer op veeeel vrije tijd. Misschien wel iets te veel. Ik ben zojuist naar het International Office geweest om te vragen of er nog een plekje vrij was voor de Finnish Culture lessen. Een half uurtje na mijn verzoek zegde iemand de cursus op waarna de laatste plaats aan mij werd toegekend. De cultuurlessen zijn iedere dag van 13.00 tot 16.00 met zo af en toe een leuk uitstapje na mooie natuurgebieden. Mijn dagen zijn dus goed gevuld. Ik heb er zin in!

Geslaagd afscheidsfeestje

Gisteren ben ik samen met mijn collega's naar de 'countryside woning' van Ingi geweest. Daar vierden we de verjaardagen van Ingi en Eduaro, en het feit dat mijn stage er op zit.

Er was eten in overvloed; van zelfgemaakte muffins tot een Spaans omelet, quiches en chocolade. Er werd een toast uitgebracht en Kristina verraste me met enkele leuke cadeautjes. Ik heb een mooi boeketje bloemen gekregen, een Tartu mok voor hopelijk mijn volgende half jaar op kantoor in Estland en een t-shirt met daarop een trotse kat en de tekst 'I'm the best' in het Engels en Ests.

Na een wandeling in het bos waarbij we tientallen kikkers gezien hebben was het tijd voor een boottochtje. Het leek net of we het decor van een sprookjesachtige film binnen vaarden. Wat was dat mooi zeg!

Net zoals tijdens het begin van mijn stage is het me weer geluk om de sauna in te duiken met een paar mannelijke collega's. Stel je een prachtig bos voor met een schattig houten huisje en een klein meertje ernaast. Nou, zo zag het er daar uit. Prachtig! Op een gegeven moment werd de sauna me iets te heet, dus hup, huisje uit, handdoek af en *plons!* de 10 graden koude waterplas in. Als dat geen goed einde van mijn stage is...?

Twee engeltjes uit Finland

Over 11 dagen vertrek ik richting Finland. Eerst ga ik op bezoek bij Anne in Pori en daarna reis ik door naar Mikkeli om een zomerschoolprogramma te volgen. Het heeft even geduurd voordat ik een geschikt onderkomen heb kunnen vinden, maar uiteindelijk is het me dan toch gelukt. Geen studentenflat met feestende buitenlandse studenten, maar een lieve Finse familie! Vanaf 29 mei heb ik er dus een Finse moeder en een broertje bij. Ik vind het heel bijzonder dat deze mensen mij na wat heen en weer gemail nu al zo goed vertrouwen dat ze me toelaten tot hun familie en huis. We hebben veel gemeenschappelijk en dezelfde levensstijl; dit zorgde meteen voor een 'klik'. Ze wonen 4km van het stadscentrum, maar gelukkig mag ik de fiets van mijn gastmoeder gebruiken om van A naar B te komen. Ik zie mezelf al helemaal gelukkig iedere morgen door het mooie Finse merendistrict richting school fietsen :) !

Dinsdagavond, de telefoon gaat... "Kun je de deur even opendoen?". Felix! Wat een verrassing, hij kwam maar zo even op bezoek! We hebben er een hele fijne week van gemaakt.

Zaterdag zijn we naar Taevaskoja geweest. De Estse natuur heeft iets mysterieus. Na een uurtje in de bus gezeten te hebben en een aantal ooievaars gespot te hebben kwamen we aan in het kleine dorpje met een stuk of 15 huizen. Een typisch Ests plaatsje dus. Esten hebben het niet zo op grote woonwijken. Het was even zoeken, maar na het volgen van een lang bospad vol omgevallen bomen als obstakels genoten we van rood-gele rotsen, grote keien, een prachtig riviertje en een fijn geurend bos om ons heen. Druk was het niet; we hebben alleen een paar vissers gespot en, niet te vergeten, twee ijsvogels! Het was heerlijk om even rustig door de natuur rond te lopen.

Het schijnt dat dit het beekje van de eeuwige jeugd is. Door je gezicht met dit water te wassen blijf je altijd jong... zeggen ze.

Onderweg heb ik hier en daar nog wat hoopjes sneeuw kunnen spotten, en dat terwijl het al bijna midden mei is! Gelukkig had ik mijn winterjas bij me; het was af en toe nog best fris.

Naast deze heugelijke avond mag ik me nu ook officieel inwoonster van Tartu noemen. Voorwaarde: de brug oversteken, maar niet via het normale voetpad.

Zo, het is weer eens tijd voor een update! De laatste dagen ben ik enorm veel onderweg geweest. Het begon vorige week woensdag, toen ik van Tartu naar mijn favoriete stad Riga ging. Donderdag overdag ben ik samen met mijn huisgenote Lisa op pad gegaan; op de fiets Riga door richting een prachtig meer aan de rand van de stad. Eenmaal aangekomen deelden we een heugelijk moment: de eerste t-shirt dag van 2011! Erg he, dat de winterjassen eind april pas weer de kast in kunnen. We genoten van de zon en de prachtige Baltische natuur. Mijn huid was echt niet meer gewend aan zo'n grote hoeveelheid zon. Bij thuiskomst ontdekte ik dat mijn schouders vuurrood waren. Oeps! Ook spotte ik de eerste sproeten alweer rondom mijn neus.

Donderdagavond was het tijd om Riga te verlaten. Voor 25 euro had ik een retourtje Riga-Warschau kunnen boeken. Over het algemeen bestaan er (vooral in Nederland) veel negatieve stereotypen over Polen. Ik was eigenlijk wel nieuwsgierig of de mensen daar echt zo dronken en steel-graag zijn als over ze wordt gezegd. Om 19.00 uur vertrok de bus. Ik zat naast een twee meter lange vent die met moeite zijn benen kwijt kon. Even voor middernacht kwamen we aan in Kaunas, Litouwen. Een tijdje terug zat ik te twijfelen of ik wel of niet een twee jarig Master programma in Kaunas zou willen volgen. Het gevoel dat me bekroop toen we de stad binnenreden deed me beseffen dat ik de juiste keuze heb gemaakt om gewoon lekker in Estland en Letland rond te blijven hangen. Onze reis ging verder richting de Poolse grens. Hoe verder van Letland verwijderd, hoe minder aantrekkelijk het landschap. Na een paar kleine hazenslaapjes zag ik dat we in Polen rond reden. Overal waar ik keek zag ik goedkope reclameborden. Beeeh. Mooi vond ik het niet. Rond 04.00 uur werd ik plotseling enorm misselijk. Ik heb bijna de hele bus ondergekotst, maar gelukkig ging het echt nog maar net goed.

Een uur of 06.00, we kwamen aan in Warschau. Eerste indruk: interessant. Ik had een paar mooie kerken gezien en de wolkenkrabbers zagen er ook wel indrukwekkend uit. Ik stapte uit op het centrale station. Ik kon pas om 15.00 uur inchecken in het hostel maar moest ongelooflijk nodig naar de wc. Een kopje thee kon er ook wel in. Gelukkig was ik welkom en kon ik mijn spullen alvast in het 'Oki Doki' hostel droppen. Ik heb een tijdje in de keuken gezeten en gepraat met enkele hostelgangers die zich klaarmaakten om naar hun werk te gaan. Ik bezocht even later een mooi park. Oh wat was het warm! Helaas bloeiden alle bomen volop waardoor ik voor het eerst sinds 2009 weer een enorme hooikoorts aanval kreeg. Ik observeerde een klein ritueel van enkele Poolse militairen en vervolgde mijn weg richting een groot winkelcentrum dat rond 10.00 uur eindelijk zijn deuren opende. Het zag er allemaal redelijk Westers uit, maar niet al te bijzonder. Ik heb een beetje gewinkeld en daarna vond ik het wel best.

Door de reis was ik erg moe en zodra ik eindelijk kon inchecken ben ik op bed gaan liggen en als een roos in slaap gevallen. Ik werd gewekt door mijn kamergenoten; twee jongens uit Brazilië. Beiden werken ze voor de Braziliaanse ambassade in Armenië. Ik sliep nog even verder en ben daarna met mijn kamergenoten en twee Duitsers richting de binnenstad gegaan met de metro. De geur van de metro deed me denken aan een prachtig reisje naar Sint-Petersburg van januari vorig jaar. In een schattig restaurantje dronken we een glas Pools bier en aten we een 'Strammer Max'; een broodje met ei en vlees. Afgelopen zomer in Duitsland heb ik dit ook een aantal keer gegeten en ik moet zeggen dat Felix dit gerecht echt stukken beter klaar kan maken! Aangezien het paasweekend was, was er in de stad niet zo veel te doen. Ik vond dit stiekem wel fijn, want ik ben echt absoluut geen feestbeest.

Zaterdag heb ik me een net zomerjasje gekocht en een lading goedkope chocolade. Echt geweldig voelde ik me niet. Ik weet niet wat er mis was, maar ik had gewoon geen klik met Warschau. De mensen daar zijn of enorm dronken of kijken me aan alsof ik van een andere planeet kom. De vrouwen daar leken het trouwens ook erg vreemd te vinden dat ik bergschoenen droeg (ja, je moet wat als je zo'n 20 km per dag loopt). Warschau is groots opgezet. De gebouwen zien er erg communistisch uit. In Riga en Tallinn is alles schattig, klein en kneuterig. Dat is in Warschau niet het geval. Wat een verschrikkelijke stad. Voor mijn gevoel hing er absoluut geen prettig sfeer. Het is een kille stad. Stiekem had ik al wel weer zin om terug naar huis te gaan. Ik besefte dat ik toch echt meer zo'n Noordelijk type ben.

Zaterdagmiddag bezocht ik de binnenstad. Overal waar ik keek zag ik kerkgangers op hun paasbest over straat lopen. Het was erg druk, wat het toch wel een beetje gezellig maakte. Ik had al zo'n negatieve indruk van Warschau dat zelfs de redelijk mooie binnenstad me niet heel erg fascineerde. Na een lange tocht heb ik in het hostel wat gegeten en ben ik maar gaan slapen. Ik had het eigenlijk al wel gezien in Warschau. Alle winkels waren sinds zaterdagmiddag dicht, dus ik moest het doen met het eten wat ik eerder die ochtend gekocht had.

Zondagochtend: yes, de laatste dag! Ik had gehoopt dat er wel wat kioskjes open zouden zijn om me van een klein ontbijtje te voorzien, maar dat was helaas niet zo. In Riga zijn alle winkels eigenlijk altijd open, zelfs of feestdagen zeker voor een paar uur. In Polen is dat niet het geval. Mijn laatste redding was de McDonlands. Ik kocht twee cheeseburgers. Op het moment dat ik de McDonalds binnenliep kwam er ook een oudere man binnen. Hij zij wat in het Pools tegen me, maar dat kon ik natuurlijk niet verstaan. We raakten aan de praat. Hij vertelde me dat hij al 14 jaar in Polen woont maar dat hij eigenlijk Canadees is. Hij werkt aan de universiteit als leraar en wilde even snel wat eten voordat de kerkdienst begon. Wat een spraakwaterval. Zonder dat ik er om gevraagd had begon de man een heel verhaal over hoe zielig de Polen eigenlijk wel niet zijn door alles wat ze hebben meegemaakt, dat ze zo'n negatief beeld over Duitsers hebben en, hoe geweldig de Poolse vrouwen wel niet zijn. "Als je vriend ooit een keer naar Polen gaat, vertrouw hem dan niet. Als Poolse vrouwen iets willen, dan krijgen ze het". Ja, sodemieter toch op man. Dat verhaal kon ik niet waarderen. De man kon het op zijn beurt niet waarderen dat ik het niet eens was met zijn "Poolse vrouwen zijn zo geweldig" verhaal. Hij ging maar door en ik kwam er gewoon niet tussen, ook al wilde ik maar al te graag weg. Van het een op het andere moment stopte de man met zijn verhaal, stond op en zei "ok jongedame, fijne dag nog". Met een verbaasd gezicht bleef ik achter, waarna ik hem ook maar snel peerde.

Ik besloot de laatste dag in een groot park door te brengen. Het viel me op dat niemand lekker met een kleedje op het gras zat. Er liepen alleen maar mensen in zondagse kleren rond die de hele tijd met hun uiterlijk bezig waren. Naast deze mensen liepen er ook veel pauwen rond in het park, dat was wel een bijzonder gezicht. Terug in het hotel kwam ik met wat Duitsers aan de praat. Samen keken we een film. Rond 17.30 uur was het tijd om te vertrekken. Van mijn laatste Poolse Zloty's kocht ik een sandwich bij Subway, die gelukkig open was deze dag. Ik moest enorm ver lopen naar het station en ik was erg bang om te laat te komen. Dat heb ik altijd, maar meestal ben ik dan alsnog een half uur te vroeg. Dat was nu ook het geval. Er liep geen hond op straat en ik voelde me niet prettig tussen al die rare Poolse gebouwen. Het begon ook nog eens heel hard te regenen, dus ik kwam als een verzopen katje aan op het station (maar wel op tijd!). Oh wat was ik blij om weer in de bus terug richting Riga te zitten!

Er zaten twee nogal alternatieve mensen voor me. Twee vrienden van hen wilden maar al te graag dichter bij zitten. Ik was eigenlijk wel blij met mijn plekje; goed zicht en veel beenruimte. Je raad het al, die twee vrienden wilden mijn plaats innemen. Na heel wat gesmeek heb ik ze toch maar op mijn plaats laten zitten. Ik moet eens wat vaker leren gewoon 'nee' te zeggen. Nu had ik plots een verschrikkelijke plaats met slecht zicht en weinig beenruimte. Mooi was dat. De vriendengroep vulde de lucht met zweetvoetenaroma en installeerden zonder pardon een geluidsinstallatie om vervolgens rare muziek af te spelen. Ik vond ze eigenlijk een beetje vervelend, maar ze hebben het toch nog een beetje goed gemaakt. Na een kort slaapje merkte ik dat ze een lolly in de vorm van een hartje naast mijn flesje water hadden gelegd. Dat vond ik dan wel weer lief.

Soms heb je dat zo, dat je een stad echt tien keer niks vindt. Nou, dat was deze keer zeker het geval. Snel weer terug naar de Baltics; veel fijner daar!

Steeds duurder

Letland is duur. Vaak is het eten in de supermarkten in Nederland nog goedkoper dan in Letland. Dit had ik eigenlijk niet verwacht, aangezien het gemiddelde loon in Letland minder is dan de helft van het loon wat een gemiddelde Nederlander per maand ontvangt. In dit bericht uit de Baltic Times wordt beschreven dat de prijzen ongelooflijk omhoog zijn gegaan de laatste tijd, vooral op cultureel gebied.

RIGA -- The cost of Latvian books and cultural services are increasing at by far the fastest rate in the EU, a recent eurostat study has found.

The cost of books in Latvia has increased by more than 43 percent in the past five years, significantly more than anywhere else in the EU. The next closest country was Hungary at around 31 percent, followed by Lithuania at just over 20 percent.

Latvia has also seen prices for cultural services skyrocket. Cultural services -- such as theatre, cinema, concerts, museums and more -- increased by an astonishing 72.3 percent. This compared to the next highest increases of around 39 percent in Lithunania, Estonia and Bulgaria.

Een tijdje geleden liep ik op een zonnige zondagochtend door mijn favoriete woonplaats Riga. Volgens mij heb ik door de jaren heen een "ballonnen sensor" ontwikkeld. Ik spotte hem meteen, deze oude volgwagen van Van Harten. Ik vroeg me af of deze wagen gestolen was of nu legaal een fijn tweede leven in Riga leidt. Volgens Peter van Harten is de bus destijds keurig ingeruild bij de dealer. Fijn. De reclame heeft het tot op de dag van vandaag overleefd. Grappig he?

RIGA - Latvia has announced plans to build a four-lane highway to Moscow while bucking criticism from the EU that it has been slow to implement the long awaited "Rail-Baltica" project that would connect the Baltic States with Western Europe.

At a meeting last week between Latvian Transport Minister Uldis Augulis and his Russian counterpart, Igor Levitin, Augulis said that Latvia would make the project a priority.

Latvian business news portal nozare.lv reported that the ministry hopes that as much as 85 percent of the funding for the project will come from the EU cohesion fund, while 15 percent would come from the state budget.

The country has already begun preparting construction of sections of the highway that connect the western Latvian towns of Ventspils and Liepaja with the Russian border. The project is planned for completion by the end of 2018.

Augulis and Levitin also discussed the possibilty of constructing a high-speed railway connecting Riga with the Russian capital.

The news came on the heels of criticisms by EU Transport Commissioner Siim Kallas that a lack of political will in Latvia has endangered the Rail-Baltica project.

''Europe already has several bad examples, where political decisions have been made, but there is no money. So these projects never take off and lead to unpleasant situations,'' Kallas said in an interview with Latvijas Avize.

Crazy Latvians. Having lived in both Estonia and Latvia I can distinguish some differences in attitudes towards foreign countries. The focus on Russia from Latvia seems to get stronger every day, whereas Estonia tries its very best to be seen as a technologically advanced Scandinavian little brother towards the rest of Europe. It's absolutely fascinating how two countries looking so similar on first hand are actually so different.

Finland!

Begin deze week heb ik te horen gekregen dat ik ben toegelaten tot een zomerschool programma in Finland: jippie!! Ik ga naar Mikkeli, in Oost-Finland. Ik kwam op het web deze informatie tegen over deze stad:

"The city of Mikkeli is the capital of the Province of Eastern Finland and it is situated by the Lake Saimaa. Mikkeli is a lively town with the most beautiful lake scenery. Certainly, Mikkeli is a combination of interesting history and traditions, active business, high education and research, culture, nature and internationality".

Contents: The use of camera equipment and production equipment of the media production set. The basics of designing and implementing a video program are studied first in theory. The practical exercises are done in groups which are a central part of the course. You will work as a member of a media production team planning the script, shooting, editing and finally accomplishing a presentable short film which will be broadcasted on the internet at www.campustv.fi"

Vandaag heb ik zitten uitpluizen hoe ik het beste naar Finland kan reizen. Met de boot vanaf Tallinn of toch met het vliegtuig? Tot mijn verbazing kostten bijna alle RyanAir vluchten over de 200 euro voor een enkele reis naar Tampere (Fin). Gekkenwerk! De vluchten zelf waren spotgoedkoop maar voor een of andere "delay/cancel levy" moest zeker 140 euro neer worden geteld. Vreemd! Gelukkig heb ik op wonderbaarlijke wijze toch een goedkope vlucht weten te bemachtigen. Voor 4 euro vlieg ik van Riga naar Tampere (ok, + 15 euro voor een extra stuk bagage en + 10 euro voor het betalen met mijn visa kaart; nouja, alsnog niet duur...).

25 mei vertrek ik richting Tampere en vanaf daar reis ik verder naar Pori om mijn vriendinnetje Anne te bezoeken. Ik kijk er al naar uit! Eind mei reis ik verder naar Mikkeli waar de zomerschool zal plaatsvinden. Al met al zal ik bijna een maand in Finland onderweg zijn. Ik heb er enorm veel zin in en ik kan niet wachten om de mooie Finse natuur te ontdekken. Mijn bergschoenen en camera zullen me tijdens mijn reis met veel plezier vergezellen. Ik denk dat ik ook maar wat Letse biertjes of vodka naar Finland zal exporteren, aangezien de prijzen van alcohol daar dolletjes hoog zijn.

Aaaah, Finland!! Ik ben blij :-). Wat toch weer lekker niet-mainstream. Geen zonnige feestbestemmingen voor Nienke, nee, zo'n mysterieus land met ongerepte natuur, stilte en een niet al te heet klimaat is veel interessanter. Wat fijn dat dit allemaal gewoon kan.

Zaiga en Alberts

Ik kan het me nog goed herinneren: 18 November 2009. De Letse Onafhankelijkheidsdag. Samen met Stevany dronk ik een Leffe in onze Belgische stamkroeg in Riga. Er kwam een wat oudere man naast ons zitten. We raakten aan de praat. Ook al vond hij het moeilijk om Engels te praten; hij deed enorm zijn best. Hij vertelde ons dat zijn vrouw gids is, en vanalles over Riga kan vertellen. Even later nodigde hij, Alberts, ons uit om met hem mee te gaan. In hartje Riga ontmoetten we zijn vrouw: Zaiga. Stevany en ik waren verbaasd over de openheid van dit koppel. Ze hadden in hun leven al veel meegemaakt, maar straalden veel levensvreugde en optimisme uit. We dwaalden door Riga, waar op dat moment waarschijnlijk ook de rest van de Letse bevolking rondliep. Zo gaat dat op onafhankelijkheidsdag. Stevany en ik genoten van alle verhalen van Zaiga en waren zelfs getuige van een lieflijk liedje dat ze samen met haar man voor ons opdroeg. We sloten de dag af met een gezellig babbeltje en een glühwein in een kroegje vlakbij de Nederlandse ambassade. Zaiga gaf haar visitekaartje aan Stevany en zei dat we altijd welkom waren voor een kopje thee. Dat zagen we wel zitten. Helaas is dat visitekaartje verloren gegaan. Ik had Zaiga en Alberts graag willen interviewen voor mijn scriptie, maar ondanks de moeite lukte het me niet om hun contact gegevens te achterhalen.

Gisteren was ik samen met Felix op weg naar de 'Bodies Revealed' tentoonstelling. We wilden nog even onze OV-kaart opladen voordat we echt zouden vertrekken. Ik zag twee bekende gezichten naderen. Zouden ze dat echt zijn? "Hmm, I think I just saw the people I met on Independence Day in 2009..." zei ik tegen Felix. "Really? What are you waiting for? Run!", zei hij. Ik trok een sprintje en sprak het oudere paar aan. Het meest vriendelijke koppel stond me met een brede glimlach te woord. Ze kenden me nog! Zaiga moest me steeds even bij m'n arm vastpakken, zo enthousiast was ze. Ook Alberts stond te stralen. Eindelijk... Eindelijk heb ik ze weergevonden. Het visitekaartje dat Zaiga me na deze ontmoeting heeft gegeven blijft veilig in mijn bezit! Ik heb heel veel respect voor deze geweldige mensen en ik hoop van harte dat het me lukt om een keertje bij ze op bezoek te gaan.

Nog even over die sneeuw...

Ja. Hallo. Hier ben ik weer. Nog even over die sneeuw he...

Op dit moment ben ik onderweg naar een conferentie. Ik zit in de bus en over ongeveer drie kwartier hoop ik aan te komen in Tallinn. Naast me, aan de andere kant van het gangpad, zit een typische Rus. Gelukkig heeft hij z'n vodkfles thuis gelaten. Voor me zitten twee Duitsers. Ze hebben de stoel die eigenlijk voor mij gereserveerd was ingepikt. Gelukkig is het niet druk en heb ik een fijn ander plekje in de bus kunnen vinden. Het erge is... Ik maakte een kort praatje met ze toen de historische vraag weer eens werd gesteld. "But, you're from Germany right?". Of het weekend met Felix heeft mijn Duitse accent versterkt, of ik begin langzaam te veranderen in een Duitser. Ik weet het niet.

Maar, waar het eigenlijk om gaat in dit bericht is de sneeuw! Ik hoorde vanaf het Emmense thuisfront dat het niet lang meer zou duren voor daar de 20 graden grens bereikt zou worden. Nou, hier gaat het er een beetje anders aan toe. Het sneeeeeeeeuwt! Echt, niet normaal. Ik ben beland in een enorme sneeuwstorm. Er komt gewoon geen einde aan. Ik kan de bomen langs de kant van de weg bijna niet eens meer zien.

*Hé een vos!* - mooi, die heb ik nog wel kunnen spotten ondanks het weer.

Hoewel bijna iedereen in Estland de laatste week al loopt te klagen over de onophoudelijke sneeuw moet ik eerlijk bekennen dat ik er op dit moment niet zo'n moeite mee heb. Het Estse landschap ziet er prachtig uit. Heel puur, mysterieus en onaangetast. Prachtig!

Geen bus, raam gepraat en hevige sneeuwstormen

Vrijdag... even na vijven verliet ik het kantoor. Om 17.45 uur zou ik normaal gesproken richting Riga vertrekken. Het busstation zat vol mensen; blijkbaar was ik niet de enige die net klaar was met werken. Het viel me op hoeveel zwerver-achtige mensen er rondstruinden. Een op het eerste oog redelijk net geklede dame grabbelde in de prullenbakken op zoek naar lege bierblikjes, waar maar liefst 6 cent statiegeld op zit. Ze had zo'n typisch onverzorgd gezicht van een alcoholverslaafde. Even verderop zaten vier mannen met een soortgelijk uiterlijk. Stiekem vond ik ze best grappig. Ze deden me een beetje denken aan de 'new kids'. Hun gedrag, hun kapsel... Het enige verschil was dat ze in plaats van 'hé junge!" het Russische 'hé privjet!" uitgalmden.

Om 18.15 uur was er nog geen bus te bekennen. Een zakenman uit Bayern informeerde aan de balie wat er precies loos was en vertelde me dat er vlak voor de bus een ernstig, waarschijnlijk dodelijk ongeluk gebeurd was waardoor het nog wel even zou duren voordat de bus in Tartu aan zou komen. De bus stond op dat moment nog vast in het noordoosten van Estland, uren verwijderd van het busstation waar ik stond te wachten.

Ik kocht me een reep chocolade en een biertje om de tijd een beetje te doden. Ik vond het fijn dat ik binnen kon wachten, aangezien er buiten een enorme sneeuwstorm aan de gang was. Een uur later zat ik nog steeds voor me uit te staren...

De vrouw van de informatiebalie had slecht nieuws. De bus zou pas heel laat in Tartu aankomen, of... helemaal niet. De Duitse zakenman wilde zijn zakenpartner in Riga ervan op de hoogte stellen dat hij later zou komen. Helaas was hij eerder die dag zijn telefoon kwijtgeraakt, dus ik liet hem mijn telefoon even gebruiken. Een nieuw plan ontstond. De Letse zakenpartner zou van Riga naar Valka (grensdorp) rijden om de Duitser daar op te pikken.

Het zag er niet naar uit dat de bus nog zou komen, dus dat Valka plan leek me ook wel wat. Gelukkig nodigde de Duitser me uit om mee te gaan, zodat ik uiteindelijk toch nog naar Riga kon gaan. Het voelde allemaal wel vertrouwd, dus ik besloot om niet langer in Tartu te blijven. Samen namen we de bus richting Valka. Daar aangekomen was het station al gesloten. Het was -5 en het waaide hard, dus prettig was het niet om buiten op de Letse zakenpartner te wachten. Het zou nog zeker een uur duren voordat we opgepikt konden worden, dus we besloten richting het 'centrum' van Valka te lopen. Twee Estse jonge jongens wezen ons de weg naar de enige plaats waar we uit de kou even konden wachten. Een restaurant. Het enige restaurant? Dat leek er op. De Duitser bestelde voor 5 euro een bord vol vis met aardappelen en ik koos voor een solanka soep om me een beetje mee op te warmen. 1,20 euro, inclusief een mandje met enorm veel brood. Niet duur! We spraken over mijn studie en over het werk van de Duitser; hij zit in de 'ramen'. Allerhande jargon termen over milieuvriendelijke ramen vlogen de tafel over. Dat is eens wat anders...

Rond 22.30 uur kwam de Letse zakenman aan in Valka. Hij pikte ons op en vertelde over de 3 uur durende rit die hij achter de rug had. Het scheen enorm slecht weer te zijn met spekgladde wegen. Hij had gelijk. Ik heb nog nooit zo'n enorme sneeuwstorm meegemaakt! Op sommige plaatsen was het zicht amper 2 meter. Bij iedere tegenligger hield ik mijn hart vast. Gelukkig had de praatgrage gezellige Let een dikke Audi waarin ik me veilig voelde.

Ik genoot van de hilarische 'raamverhalen' op beurzen en begon steeds vrolijker te worden dat we Riga naderden. Na wat meer sneeuw en een bliksemschicht kwamen we eindelijk in de Riga regio aan. Om 00.30 uur werd ik vlak voor mijn huis afgezet. Ik bedankte beide mannen hartelijk.

Eindelijk, na een lange soms best wel enge reis was ik weer thuis.

Gras! Of niet?

En net toen ik dacht "hé, dit is de eerste keer dat ik gras zie hier in Estland!" viel het weer met bakken uit de hemel; grote sneeuwvlokken, miljoenen tegelijk. Volgens mij gaat het nog wel even duren voordat het hier lente is. Hoewel... toen ik eerder deze week naar mijn werk liep zaten er al veel mensen buiten op terrasjes, lekker in de zon. Het was toen +2...

Meeting in Riga en werken op zaterdag

Zo... tijd voor een update!

Woensdag had ik samen met mijn baas een meeting in Riga. We spraken met een jonge vent uit Wit-Rusland over een project dat mede door het Institute of Baltic Studies georganiseerd zal worden. Erg interessant. Ik besefte maar weer eens hoe gelukkig we mogen zijn om in een vrij land te leven. In Wit-Rusland is dat namelijk niet zo vanzelfsprekend. Samen met mijn collega's en Felix sloten we de dag af met een Leffe, hmm! Grappig detail: mijn baas was eerder die ochtend in de bus onder gekotst door haar dochtertje, waardoor ze de hele dag met een zure broek rondliep ;-).

Donderdagochtend nam ik de bus terug naar Tartu. Stiekem had ik daar eigenlijk helemaal niet zoveel zin in. Ik vond het heerlijk om weer even in Riga te zijn. Ook al voel ik me thuis in Tartu, er gaat niets boven Riga!

Vrijdag was een lange werkdag. Ik ben ontzettend hard aan het werk geweest om mijn rapporten aan te vullen. Ik had gedacht dat ik binnenkort nog wat interviews met asielzoekers zou moeten afnemen, maar mijn baas vertelde me dat dat waarschijnlijk niet door zou gaan. "Ze zullen meer bezig zijn met het doen van een huwelijksvoorstel dan met het eigenlijke interview. En, ze zouden echt hun verhaal niet kwijt willen aan een jonge vrouw; ze zullen je niet respecteren". Dat wordt hem dus niet..

Deze middag (ja, werken op zaterdag!) heb ik een jonge Estse geïnterviewd voor een film project voor Bulgarije waar ik op dit moment mee bezig ben. Volgende week moet het filmpje klaar zijn, dus jullie zullen tzt de link wel op mijn blog terug vinden.

Nu eerst een glas kefir en een karum! En, aangezien het een lange, drukke week was, misschien nog wel een middagdutje ook.

Seminar British Council, Estonian Ministry and their glass table

Yesterday my alarm clock went off at 05.00. Early! Time to head to Tallinn. Kristina picked me up with her car and it was planned to go to the train station together. Also Eduardo, my new colleague, joined. He had not such a good start of the day. His roommate loudly Skyped till 04.00, and when taking the first steps outside on the ice Eduardo fell down, hurting his arm which is now severely bruised.

For the first time I entered an Estonian train. They are like the Latvian ‘Soviet expresses’, only then colored blue and white. ‘Edelaraudtee’ is the national Estonian train company. Sounds sweet! We found ourselves a nice place in the 1^st class department. There was a bistro on board selling sandwiches for only 1,60 euro, which in the Netherlands would cost at least 4,50 euro. I brought my own survival kit, consisting of a German like streuseltaler, half a liter of kefir and a karums. Kristina told me that I’m very well integrated. With Eduardo this process will be a bit more difficult. He’s only here for half a week and he misses the Spanish food already. During the train ride we had free access to the internet. Crazy, that such a small country in the North-East is so ahead on the West concerning technology.

We left the train one stop before the main station and ended up in the Russian area where we took the tram. Our destination was the Radisson Blu Olümpia hotel. The British Council organized a seminar on ‘Estonia’s road to tolerance’ there. It took place in a banquet hall with around 12 tables, full with tea, coffee and food. Happy Nienke! I seriously enjoyed listening to all the guest speakers. There were a lot of ‘big names’ present on this event, like

Indarjit Singh, the best known representative of the Sikh community in Britain and a regular contributor to the BBC’s ‘Thought for the Day’;

Viktoria Korpan, the Russian chief editor of the daily newspaper Postimees;

Abdul Turay, a British journalist discussing the relationship between black people and Estonians, very entertaining;

Indrek Teder, the Estonian Chancellor of Justice;

Marju Lauristin, a sympathic 75-year-old politician and social scientist;

and John Abraham Godson, the first black member of the Polish parliament.

Around 15.00 o’clock it was time to leave the seminar. After a car-sick-making taxi ride we arrived at the Estonian Ministry to discuss our asylum seekers project. Seems like Kristina found herself two very sensitive interns, because Eduardo and I both stepped out of the car with faces white as snow. The meeting would be in Estonian, however, this was an opportunity for Eduardo and me to see how meetings in Estonia normally take place. Like expected: very informal. I like that. However, before the meeting could take place we had to wait for some minutes in the main hall. Together with Kristina I was sitting on a couch, when looking up seeing the big squared staircase leading to the highest floor. Suddenly we heard something falling into many, many pieces. It was somewhere upstairs. All the people sitting and waiting downstairs shared a concerned look. At that moment Kristina and I had to run. A glass table broke down in 1000 pieces, falling down from the 3th floor, exactly on our heads. What a shock! Luckily no one was injured.

Kristina and Eduardo stayed in Tallin overnight. I decided to shop around in Tallinn a little and take the 19.30 o’clock bus back to Tartu.

Today I’ll work at the office and around 18.00 o’clock it’s time head home again. I’m looking forward to spend some lovely days in Riga :) !!

Kama

Een typisch Estse lekkernij is Kama. Ik ben er dol op! Normaal bestaat het goed vullende drankje uit de volgende ingrediënten:

- Kama, een meel mengsel bestaande uit geroosterde gerst, rogge, haver en erwten;

- Kefir, een soort lobbige karnemelk afkomstig uit de Kaukasus;

- Zoetstof. Vaak wordt er suiker voor gebruikt, maar ik hou het liever bij mijn Letse bos honing.

Blunder: toen ik samen met mijn Estse collega opzoek ging naar een plaatje van hoe de Kama verpakking er uit ziet (om het terug te kunnen vinden in de supermarkt) vergat ik even dat Kama ook de god van de liefde is. Google images liet iets andere plaatjes zien dan de onschuldige afbeelding van de verpakking waar ik eigenlijk naar opzoek was ^^.

Lenin, Sovjet blokken en uitzicht op Rusland

Zondagochtend vertrok mijn bus richting Narva al om 07.45 uur. De reis verliep langzaam. Ik denk dat we gemiddeld met zo'n 50 km/u richting het Noorden kachelden. Ik verbaasde me over de slecht schoongemaakte wegen. Een brede tweebaansweg weg werd eigenlijk nu alleen als eenbaansweg gebruikt. Als er een tegenligger aankwam kwam het op geluk aan of het allemaal wel zou passen. We reden zelfs enkele stukken over afgelegen bospaadjes. Prachtig, de Estse natuur! In de verte spotte ik even later zelfs het enorm grote Peipsi meer; helemaal bevroren natuurlijk.

Even voordat we Narva bereikten stond een kilometers lange rij met trucks te wachten voor de Russische grens. We reden spook, en de tegenliggers moesten dat maar accepteren. Ik besefte maar weer eens dat ik absoluut geen fan ben van Baltische inhaalmanoeuvres, daar gaat mijn hart veel te snel van kloppen.

We reden de lelijkste stad binnen die ik ooit had gezien. Ja, zelfs Daugavpils in Letland is nog mooier. Overal stonden van die grauwe Sovjet appartementen blokken. Individualiteit en het uniek zijn komen niet in het woordenboek van Narva voor. Alles zag er hetzelfde uit, kilometers lang. Ik had het idee dat ik niet meer in Estland was. Alles voelde zo Russisch. De mensen zagen er Russisch uit, op straat hoorde ik alleen maar Russisch en er reden veel auto's met Russische kentekenplaten rond. Als je ooit eens naar Rusland wil, maar je krijgt geen visum, ga dan gewoon eens naar Narva.

Op het busstation ontmoette ik Margus, mijn collega voor deze speciale dag. Hij komt uit Narva, maar studeert in Tartu. Hij heeft twee jaar in het grootste museum van Narva gewerkt, en dat was te merken ook. Hij kon me echt alles over deze stad vertellen. Hij leek zelfs wel een beetje trots op zijn geboortestad.

Op naar het eerste stemlokaal, midden in een betonnen bos van Sovjet flats. We namen plaats op de observer stoelen en bekeken rustig hoe het stemmen er hier aan toe ging. Heel gemoedelijk, niets op aan te merken. Zo ging het eigenlijk de hele dag verder. In totaal hebben we zeven stemlokalen bezocht. Het verbaasde me dat ik me zo veilig voelde in deze stad, ondanks al die grauwe gebouwen, nors uitziende mensen en enge steegjes.

Tussen het observeren door heeft Margus me veel van de stad laten zien. Een echt stadscentrum hebben ze daar niet, alleen een vervallen stadhuis. Ook nam hij me mee naar een bastion, wat niet te zien was omdat er een meter sneeuw op lag, en een soort oud verdediging kasteel. Vanaf de toren hadden we prachtig uitzicht over Rusland. De grens tussen Estland en Rusland is slechts een rivier. Best apart, ik kon de mensen in Rusland rond zien lopen, maar zonder visum is het gewoon onmogelijk om ook maar een voet op Russische grond te zetten, tenzij je opgepakt wilt worden natuurlijk.

Verborgen in een hoekje ontdekte ik iets moois, nouja, mooi.. eerder apart. Lenin! Zijn standbeeld wees vol daadkracht richting het Oosten, richting Rusland.

Over het observeren van de verkiezingen kan ik verder weinig vertellen. Ik heb het enorm naar m'n zin gehad, maar naast alle officiële procedures (heel interessant eigenlijk!) valt er niet echt iets blog-proof over te zeggen. Dat zou een te droog verhaal worden. Dus, hier hou ik het bij!

... ga je gewoon ongelooflijk over je nek. Dit overkwam mij vanmiddag, bijna. Ik was boodschappen aan het doen in de Rimi, en ik moest weer eens 10x de winkel door omdat ik de dingen die ik zocht niet kon vinden. Het viel me op dat er zich een onbeschrijfelijke stinkende walm door de winkel verplaatste. De lief slapende baby naast de thee afdeling was het niet, dat had ik inmiddels wel door. Opeens zag ik een man al strompelend richting het vodka schap lopen. Dat was de boosdoener. Wat een meur! Normaal staan er een altijd een aantal zwevers voor het supermarktje naast mijn huis. Daar komt ook altijd zo'n rare penetrante lucht af. Maar het aroma dat deze man met zich meesleepte sloeg echt alles, en dat terwijl er in deze stads Rimi altijd redelijk nette mensen rondlopen. Ik liep net zo lang door de winkel tot dat de beste stinkerd een wachtrij voor de kassa had uitgezocht. Onderweg kwam ik nog een Estse variant van een Duitse 'streuseltaler' tegen; die mocht met mij mee. Ik sloot aan in de rij van de kassa die het verst van de man verwijderd was. Vier jonge kerels die voor de zaterdagavond net wat lekkers wilden inslaan liepen nietsvermoedend langs hem. Plots werd de hele supermarkt getrakteerd op kokhals geluiden, opgetrokken neuzen en wapperende handen om de stank te verdrijven. Ik wisselde enkele blikken met de jonge knullen en wachtte al lachend verder.

I received my observer certificate today! Sunday the Estonian Parliamentary elections will be held. I'm going to check if everything goes following the rules...

... in Narva, or actually; almost Russia!

Only 4% of the population of Narva is Estonian. In Narva 93.85% op the inhabitants are Russian-speakers. 80% are ethnic Russians.

Het Duitse accent...

Wat is er met me aan de hand? De Nederlanders op de campus waren het er vanaf dag 1 al over eens. "Nienke, je hebt een ongelooflijk Duits accent als je Engels praat". Nouja, goed, dat zal dan wel zo zijn. Ze waren me vast een beetje aan het stangen, dacht ik. Hoewel... vanochtend had ik een bespreking met mijn begeleidster over een leuk film project waar we mee bezig zijn. Op zoek naar een voice over zei mijn begeleidster plots: "Nienke, we laten jou dat gewoon doen, ook al heb je wel een beetje een Duits accent, maar dat maakt helemaal niet uit". Een paar uur later stond ik in de keuken om mijn lasagne klaar te maken toen een andere collega aan me vroeg wat nou eigenlijk mijn moedertaal is. "Nederlands? Hmm, je klinkt eigenlijk een beetje Duits!", zei ze. Misschien moet ik in vervolg maar gewoon Duits met Felix praten, zodat mijn Engels onaangetast blijft ;-).

Photoshoot for Latvian designer Sabine Skarule

Around two weeks ago I received an e-mail from my friend, the talented photographer Katrina De Rycke. "I really hope you are in Riga at the moment and have nothing planned for Sunday yet. Because - you know, you would make such a contrast to these clothes that I just can't imagine somebody else for this shooting now!". I planned already a nice lazy Sunday in Tartu together with Felix, so unfortunately, that Sunday was no option for me. I asked Katrina if the date of the shoot could be postponed. I was pleasantly surprised by her answer: "next Tuesday is ok!".

I took the early bus to Riga and met Katrina in a sweet hairdressers shop in a suburb of Riga. We bought some grey fake hair, since the blonde stuff didn't fit to my natural hair colour at all. Back home at Katrina's place Sabine, the designer, unpacked her self made futuristic clothes, the hairdresser was being creative with the grey fake hair and Katrina again proved her make-up artist talents. The atmosphere was great, even though there was a small language barrier. Kristina, the hairdresser, almost only spoke Russian, Sabine preferred to speak Latvian, Katrina spoke Russian as well Latvian and I spoke English with sometimes some Latvian words in between. Katrina's daughter even tried to teach me some Russian. I did my best to teach her some names of colors in Latvian.

The photoshoot took around 10 hours. It was the third time I was working with Katrina and just like last times it went extremely well. Normally 'let's scream and act crazy!' person, but when Katrina gives me a 'mood', the actress in me comes alive. I feel comfortable and free when standing in front of Katrina's camera.

Around 7 o'clock in the evening it was time for a nice meal with the four of us. After that two out of five costumes still had to be photographed, so you can probably imagine I went home extremely late.

It was a wonderful day! Thank you Katrina, Sabine and Kristina!

Karums kwark snacks

De grootste producent van deze heerlijkheden is de Letse fabrikant Karums, vandaar dat ik deze zoete rolletjes over het algemeen altijd gewoon ‘Karums’ noem. Sinds ik in de Baltics woon is de omzet van Karums en alle soortgelijke kleinere ondernemingen waarschijnlijk flink gestegen. In de flat waar ik woonde in Riga staken mijn huisgenoten me altijd de gek aan met mijn flinke Karums consumptie. ‘A Karums a day keeps the doctor away!’. Kan best, want vaak ben ik hier niet ziek geweest. Gelukkig zijn de kwark rolletjes omhuld in chocolade ook in Estland een groot succes. Twee weken geleden ontdekte ik zelfs een met een Caramac laagje en een beetje caramelsaus in het midden. Heerlijk! In de supermarkt naast mijn huis verkopen ze o.a. de twee rolletjes die op dit moment mijn favoriet zijn. Ten eerste: het in witte chocolade gehulde kwark rolletje, met koekjessmaak en een bescheiden hart met zure besjes smaak. Ten tweede: een after-eight-like rolletje met mintsmaak, omhuld in melkchocolade. Met deze suikerstoten kom ik de dag wel door!

Goed om te weten dat ik mijn blog niet voor niets schrijf! Ik was positief verbaasd toen ik zojuist de statistieken van mijn website onder ogen kwam. In de maand februari heb ik 456 bezoekers gehad, waarvan 205 unieke. Gemiddeld krijg ik dagelijks 16 bezoekers, maar er zaten deze maand ook dagen tussen dat meer dan 30 mensen per dag mijn website hebben bekeken. Leuk!
